She received her PharmD from Creighton University in Omaha, NE after which she completed a PGY-1 in Pharmacy Practice at The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC and a PGY-2 in Pain Management and Palliative Care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

Caroline M. Barnes, MPH, CHES, CPH, BS, BA, recently completed her MPH at the University of Tennessee, with experience in rural health, food access, and community-engaged research. She works with the CDC-funded High Obesity Program, Be More Tennessee, where she conducts assessments, develops materials, and collaborates with local leaders to address food insecurity in rural communities. Caroline was selected to be a part of the University of Tennessee’s Community Engagement Academy, where she further explored crafting culturally responsive interventions that foster trust and sustainability. She often writes and presents information about food access, actively integrating community voices into public health initiatives while promoting equity and sustainability.

W. Scott Black, MD received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Kentucky Department of Family and Community Medicine where he also served as Chief Resident. He later completed a Sports Medicine fellowship at Wake Forest University. Dr. Black is also board certified in Obesity Medicine, he has a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology, and a graduate certificate in Sports Nutrition. He has over 30 years of experience practicing and teaching Family and Sports Medicine utilizing a lifestyle first approach. He is currently the Clinical Director of the University of Kentucky University Health Service. Prior to returning to UK, he started a community – based Lifestyle Medicine practice at Owensboro Health in Owensboro, KY. He has been back at UK since August 2023.

Mike Brunet, PhD, ATC, is the Director of Clinical Research at UK St. Claire in Morehead, KY and an outreach Athletic Trainer for the University of Kentucky. Dr. Brunet received both his Master in Exercise Physiology and PhD in Sports Medicine at the University of Virginia. During his work history he has given presentations, written articles and authored a textbook on Disordered Eating and Eating Disorders. As a certified Athletic Trainer he has helped athletes that have struggled with Disordered Eating behaviors.

Mary E. Lacy, PhD, is an epidemiologist with expertise in diabetes epidemiology, informatics, and implementation science. Dr. Lacy earned her PhD in Epidemiology from Brown University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. She joined the faculty in the College of Public Health at the University of Kentucky in 2019.

Margaret McGladrey, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the UK College of Public Health Department of Health Management and Policy. She specializes in mixed-methods participatory health research, quality improvement and program evaluation, and implementation practice and research to study and address the social determinants of health. This community-engaged research involved cross-system coordination with diverse organizations – many located in rural Kentucky – including local public health, behavioral health, child welfare, criminal-legal system, education, social services, advocacy, and arts and culture agencies and people with lived experience receiving their services.

Kristen McQuerry, PhD, earned her MS and PhD in Statistics, from the University of Kentucky. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Kentucky’s College of Public Health. Dr. McQuerry has extensive experience in collaborative research and applied statistics, having served as the Director of the Applied Statistics Lab and as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics. She also spent five years in the pharmaceutical industry as a Principal Biostatistician, where she led statistical efforts across a range of therapeutic areas including oncology, neurology, and rare diseases. Her current academic work focuses on interdisciplinary research, with contributions to projects in women’s health, community outreach, internal medicine, and family and community medicine.

and a member of Markey Cancer Center at the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Svetla Slavova is a Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Kentucky. She has been the principal investigator on grants funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Dr. Slavova has authored and co-authored many peer-reviewed publications highlighting analytical approaches to understanding and combating the opioid epidemic. She received a Distinguished Leader Award from the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists for her leadership for improved drug overdose mortality surveillance and building epidemiological capacity in state and local health departments, and the Lexington Public Health Hero award for providing free naloxone to community.
