Needs Statement

Healthcare teams lack awareness and knowledge about harm reduction services, including 1) prevention and response efforts, 2) available resources, 3) promising practices, 4) disease testing and prevention, 5) addiction and recovery services, 6) local and state partnerships, and 7) the current status of the drug overdose epidemic.

Target Audience

The target audience for this lecture includes physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, public health professionals, attorneys, peer support specialists, certified alcohol & drug counselors, community health workers, registered environmental health specialists/registered sanitarians, and any others who might be involved in harm reduction or the treatment of substance use disorders.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Recite how Drug War policies have led to the overdose crisis and additional ills of drug misuse.
2. Create a general policy roadmap for how to end overdose, focused on ensuring universal access to harm reduction, housing, proven treatment, and public health tools.
3. Discuss how a movement of Kentuckians is needed to achieve these policy goals.
