Needs Statement

This module is intended for school personnel training (nurses and designated non-nurse staff) who will provide diabetes-related care and medication administration to students with diabetes in a school setting. Speakers include nurse experts in the field of pediatric diabetes from UKHC Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center, Norton Children's Wendy Novak Center (Louisville), and Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

Nurses and other designated non-licensed school personnel

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify carbohydrate content in food items and calculate routine meal-time insulin dosage using the prescribed insulin to carbohydrate ratio (I:C), while reviewing insulin dosages for insulin pumps, pens, and syringes.
• Demonstrate ability to calculate correct dosage of insulin.
• Discuss how to manage various situations that may occur during school hours or school-related activities (i.e., miscalculated dose, ketones, severe hypoglycemia).
• Describe signs, symptoms, and treatment of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia events.

In support of improving patient care, University of Kentucky HealthCare CECentral is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
