Biosketch
Dr. Stephen Grupke graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and biochemical cellular & molecular biology. He obtained a Master of Science in anatomy and cell biology at New York Medical College (NYMC). Simultaneously, Dr. Grupke completed research in a neurophysiology lab and published work on neuropeptides and their role in consciousness.
Dr. Grupke continued his tenure at NYMC to earn his medical degree, receiving awards from the Departments of Neurosurgery and Physiology. He was elected to be a charter member of NYMC's chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
Dr. Grupke completed his general surgery internship and neurosurgery residency at the University of Kentucky, where he was selected to join the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Grupke won the Surgery Resident Teaching Award from the Department of Surgery multiple times. He represented his residency program on a national level by competing in the Congress of Neurological Surgeons SANS academic challenge, placing second in 2014 and finishing first in 2015 with his co-resident Dr. Farhan Mirza.
Under the guidance of his mentor Dr. Justin Fraser, Dr. Grupke completed a rigorous endovascular neurosurgical curriculum during his residency, studying interventions to protect brains injured from stroke.
Currently, Dr. Grupke serves as an Assistant Professor within the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.
