Biosketch
Dr. Sawaya achieved national recognition in his research and publication on bone, calcium and phosphorus metabolism in patients with chronic kidney disease, particularly the early effect of uremia on vitamin D binding to its target genes and racial differences in the manifestation of renal ostreodystrophy.
Dr. Sawaya received numerous teaching awards, including 3 pre-clinical Golden Apple awards, 3 Abraham Flexner Master Educator awards, a university-wide Great Teacher award and the American College of Physician Outstanding Teacher Award, Kentucky Chapter. He was named a Best Doctor in 2013.
