Biosketch
Mikel D. Smith has been the Director of the Adult Echocardiography Laboratory at the Gill Heart Institute since 1988. He also serves as the Medical Director of the Cardiac Sonographer Training Program at St. Catharine College in Springfield, Ky. He is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital and has been with the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine since 1982.
Smith received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and completed his residency in medicine and fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
Smith has received a number of honors, including the Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at the University of Kentucky as well as the Outstanding Teacher Award for Kentucky from the American College of Physicians, and has received Master Teacher Awards in all five categories at the University of Kentucky. In June 2014, he was given the Richard Popp Excellence in Teaching Award- a national honor for teaching given by the American Society of Echocardiography. Smith has written 15 book chapters and authored over 200 papers and abstracts.
Smith served on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Echocardiography and the editorial board for the Journal of the American Society of Echo. In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, he was elected a Fellow in the American Heart Association Council on Clinical Cardiology, and is board certified in both Nuclear Cardiology and Echocardiography.
