Biosketch
Dr. Mahan is a Clinical Pharmacist at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque primarily in Cardiac Critical Care and Intensive Care. He received his BS/PharmD from UNM and specializes in antithrombotic therapy and venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention. He completed an NATF fellowship at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada during which he externally validated the IMPACT-ILL VTE risk assessment model in medical patients. In 2006 as the Director of Pharmacy at Lovelace Healthcare, he partnered with National Quality Forum and the Joint Commission for VTE quality measure development. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at UNM and his primary research interest is to reduce the incidence of preventable VTE and stroke and appropriate transitions of care with antithrombotics. He has published five book chapters and almost thirty peer-reviewed articles primarily of original research and delivered approximately 300 lectures. He is currently involved as an investigator in several studies in the field.
