Biosketch
Anthony J. Lembo, MD, is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in
Boston, MA, where he is Director of the GI Motility Center. Dr. Lembo is also Assistant Professor of
Medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.
Dr. Lembo earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and
completed his residency in medicine and fellowships in gastroenterology and GI motility/irritable
bowel syndrome at UCLA Medical Center.
Research interests of Dr. Lembo focus on medical issues such as gastroenterological causes of pelvic
pain, diagnostic strategies and pharmacological treatment options for irritable bowel syndrome,
chronic constipation, and the use of peripheral opioids for functional GI disease.
In addition to his many published works, which include journal articles, books, book chapters, and
educational materials, Dr. Lembo is an editorial reviewer for Gastroenterology, Digestive Diseases and
Science, Pharmacotherapeutics, and others, and an editorial advisory board member of Gastroenterology
& Hepatology. He is an active member of the American Gastroenterology Association, the American
Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society, and the American College of Gastroenterology, as well as a
council member of the Functional Brain Gut Research Group.
