Biosketch
Andreas Greinacher received his M.D. from the Universities of Aachen and Würzburg, Germany. He specialized for transfusion medicine, immuno hematology and clinical immunology at the University Giessen, Germany. From 1994 to 2023 he was the head of the department of transfusion medicine at the Universitätsmedizin Greifswald. For several years he was the Medical Director of the University Hospital and for nearly 20 years associate Dean of the Medical Faculty. Since 2024 he is senior professor associated to the department of transfusion medicine.
His major areas of research interest are hereditary and immune mediated thrombocytopenias, especially heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and the application of nanotechnologies and biophysical methods to understand the molecular mechanisms of antigenicity of endogenous proteins. He has published more than 500 papers on these topics and contributed to many textbooks in thrombosis and hemostasis. He has received numerous award, incuding 2009 Pia Glas-Greenwalt Memorial Lecture of the ISTH; 2017 Francqui Leerstoel, Katholische Universitaet Leuven; 2018 James Blundell Award, British Blood Transfusion Society, 2020 Esteemed Career Award of the ISTH; 2021 Virchow Award, 2022 Award of the German Academic Medical Centers, 2022 Award for Analytical Biochemistry, 2023 Wallace H. Coulter lecture and award International Society Laboratory Hematology, 2023 Ham Wasserman Lecture ASH
