Dr. Johanne Dillon is a magna cum laude graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital immediately prior to beginning Diagnostic Radiology residency at Dartmouth Medical School/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Following Diagnostic Radiology residency, Dr. Dillon completed a fellowship in Pediatric Radiology at Harvard Medical School/Children’s Hospital Boston and is board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology and Pediatric Radiology.
Dr. Dillon’s interest in teaching radiology increased exponentially during her four years as an attending pediatric radiologist at Boston Medical Center/Boston University School of Medicine where a 4-week Radiology clerkship is required of all students during their 3rd or 4th year. Prior to her having been entrusted with the clerkship by Dr. Dillon’s chair, the Radiology clerkship was ranked in the bottom quintile of clerkships. She was thrilled to take the Radiology clerkship to the number one position in the medical school. During that process, in 2009, Dr. Dillon was honored to be the recipient of the Committee on Faculty Affairs Educator of the Year Award in Clinical Sciences, an award which had never before been won by a radiologist, and she also won the Department of Radiology Medical Student Teaching Award in 2009, 2010, and 2011. In addition, in 2010 Dr. Dillon and a colleague were the recipients of the Association of University Radiologists (AUR) Whitley Award for Best Paper on Education in Radiology, “Teaching evidence-based imaging in the radiology clerkship using the ACR appropriateness criteria.”
In September 2011, Dr. Dillon was recruited to the University of Kentucky where she served as the Division Chief of Pediatric Radiology until 2017. She is currently the Associate Professor of Radiology and Pediatrics. Dr. Dillon is passionate about pediatric radiology and is particularly interested in evidence-based imaging in nonaccidental trauma (NAT) and the development of novel imaging strategies to reduce diagnostic imaging-related ionizing radiation exposure in neonates. She remains very active in teaching, noting the Department of Pediatrics has asked her year after year to give a lecture every month to the Pediatrics residents. In November 2019, Dr. Dillon was honored to be voted Faculty of the Month in the Department of Pediatrics. In addition to her work in the Division of Pediatric Radiology, she is pursuing a Ph.D. in Clinical and Translational Science.
On September 25, 2023, Dr. Dillon will embark on a new and exciting chapter in her practice of pediatric radiology at the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent in Indianapolis, IN. Although she will no longer be a pediatric radiologist at the University of Kentucky, Dr. Dillon will continue her studies at UK toward the Ph.D. in Clinical and Translational Science.
