Biosketch
Dr. Leonard Gomella is the Bernard Godwin Professor of Prostate Cancer and Chair of Urology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Philadelphia. He is also Senior Director for Clinical Affairs for Sidney Kimmel Cancer and is Urology Vice President for Jefferson Health. Dr. Gomella completed medical school, surgery, and urology training at the University of Kentucky. After completing a fellowship in the Surgery Branch of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, he joined Jefferson in 1988 and was appointed Chair in 2002. His clinical care involves non-robotic urologic oncology, and his research focus is working with basic scientists to translate laboratory discoveries into clinical applications. His team was the first to use RT-PCR to detect circulating micro-metastasis in patients with prostate cancer. This discovery led to a new field of investigation known today as the “liquid biopsy.” Dr. Gomella has given over 600 presentations, written over 500 papers, and edited 63 editions of 17 books for medical students, residents, and practicing physicians, many of which have been translated into foreign languages. The 12th Edition of his medical student book has been renamed “Gomella and Haist’s Clinicians Pocket Reference” in his honor. In 2010 he became Editor-in-Chief of the “Canadian Journal of Urology International.” Dr. Gomella has served as Urology Chair for RTOG/NRG and President of the Mid-Atlantic AUA and the Society of Urologic Oncology. In 2017 and 2019, he was Co-Chair of the Philadelphia Prostate Cancer International Consensus on genetic testing for prostate cancer. He is a member of the American Society of Genitourinary Surgeons and the distinguished Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons. Numerous awards and recognitions include a University of Kentucky Alumni award, multiple “Top Doctor Listings,” a “Distinguished Contribution Award” from the AUA, and the “Jefferson Achievement Award in Medicine.”
