Biosketch
John H. Armstrong, MD, FACS, is a national health leader, trauma surgeon, and medical educator. He has led local, regional, and statewide trauma systems and received the 2016 Florida Medical Association Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Armstrong has served as Florida's Secretary of Health, Chief Medical Officer at the USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), Tampa, FL, and Trauma Medical Director of Shands at the University of Florida Medical Center, Gainesville, FL. He completed his career in the US Army Medical Corps at the rank of Colonel in 2005. Appointments included Director, US Army Trauma Training Center, in association with the Ryder Trauma Center, Miami, FL; Program Director, Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium, Brooke Army Medical Center, Texas; and Director, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery in surgery and surgical critical care.
Dr. Armstrong is a graduate of Princeton University, the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and the US Army Command and General Staff College. He performed his surgical residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI, his trauma/surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, and his Master Educators in Medical Education Fellowship at the University of Florida. He is a member of the US Defense Health Board Trauma and Injury Subcommittee and past-member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee for Surgery. He serves on the ACS Committee on Non-Technical Skills and Committee on Surgical Skills Training for Practicing Surgeons. He is a former young physician trustee and executive committee member of the American Medical Association and past-Governor for Florida on the ACS Board of Governors. He is co-Editor of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness course (first edition), and has 48 published articles and book chapters. He has received five institutional teaching awards. His research interests include trauma systems, mass casualty triage, and continuing professional development.
