Biosketch
Edward G. Buckley, MD is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from Duke University in 1972 in with a BSE in Electrical Engineering. He received his MD degree from Duke in 1977 followed by a residency in ophthalmology. He completed two fellowships, one in pediatric ophthalmology and the other in neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. In 1983 he returned to Duke on the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics.
Dr. Buckley has spent his entire academic career at Duke, rising to Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics in 1993. He is currently the Director of both the Pediatric and Neuro-ophthalmology services. His main area of research and clinical activity is centered on the treatment of complicated strabismus and congenital cataracts. In
2001 he assumed the role of Associate Dean for Curriculum at Duke and is now the Vice Dean for Education overseeing all of the education programs of the medical school.
Dr. Buckley is currently the Chair of the American Board of Ophthalmology, President of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Past Chair of the Section of Ophthalmology of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and past President of the American Orthoptic Society. He has received the Senior Honor award from the AAO and AAPOS. He has given the Marshall Parks Lecture at the AAO, the Richard Scobee Lecture for the AACO, and the Costenbader Lecture at the AAPOS.
