Biosketch
Ana Bastos de Carvalho, M.D., is a full-time instructor at the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, University of Kentucky. She is a medical retina fellow and the co-director of the Global Ophthalmology division. She also works with Dr. Eric Higgins to optimize and expand the department’s teleretinal screening network, comprised of 45 sites state-wide where diabetic retinopathy screening is provided.
Dr. Carvalho attended medical school and completed an ophthalmology residency at the Lisbon Medical School, in Lisbon, Portugal. In 2011, she joined the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Kentucky to conduct post-doctoral research in age-related macular degeneration. She subsequently joined the clinical faculty at the department in 2017 to complete a medical retina fellowship.
Dr. Carvalho is actively involved in research, mainly focusing on implementation of screening for retinal diseases, and has contributed numerous original papers in peer-reviewed journals.
