Biosketch
Sharon K Dwyer received a Master’s in Adult Education from Virginia Tech and a Bachelor of Science from The Ohio State University in Clinical and Community Nutrition. She has the Certificate from the Leadership Academy in Public Health from the University of North Carolina.
Ms. Dwyer is currently the Co-Coordinator for the Appalachia Navigation Network Project, University of Kentucky Prevention Research Center. The purpose of the project is to develop a culturally effective curriculum and materials, address the specific issues and needs of the Appalachian population, and expand and improve cancer navigation programs across the Appalachian states. The curriculum is distributed in small group community based trainings in coordination with current navigation programs, health care systems, and community partners.
Previously, Ms. Dwyer was the Project Coordinator for the Virginia site of the Appalachian Community Cancer Network, an NCI/NIH multi-state project. In collaboration with other state coordinators, her responsibilities included the development of community based, culturally relevant cancer outreach efforts, facilitating multi-state trainings and the development and facilitation of community-based approaches to cancer prevention, screening and early detection. Previously she served as a Research Associate and Project Coordinator at the Institute for Community Health at Virginia Tech. In this position she developed research proposal responses and protocols. She directed inter-disciplinary teams of project personnel and provided oversight and coordination of local, regional and state research, education, outreach and trainings related to Institute projects.
Ms. Dwyer has served as Chairperson of the Virginia Cancer Coalition, an invited Leader for the Comprehensive Cancer Leadership Institute at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a facilitator for the C-Change, Collaborating to Conquer Cancer Summit. She has advanced training and certification in Health Literacy and is a Trainer of Trainers for the Stanford University Chronic Disease Self-Management Program.
