Mindy Coleman is the counsel for the Jockeys’ Guild, Inc., the organization representing professional jockeys in Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing in the United States. The Guild was founded in May 1940 to provide benefits, serve as the voice for jockeys in the racing industry, represent jockeys throughout the country and to monitor developments in local, state and federal laws affecting the racing industry, and in particular, the jockeys. Currently, there are approximately 1,270 members, including active, retired and permanently disabled riders.
Ms. Coleman’s childhood was spent in the Northwest, in Eastern Oregon and in Idaho. She grew up with a passion for horses, including dressage and jumping horses, as well as race horses. Her family had both Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racehorses, which ran in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
She graduated from Arizona State University in 2001 with her B.S. and received her J.D. from Gonzaga University in 2004. From December of 2004 until she became in-house counsel for the Jockeys’ Guild in 2009, Ms. Coleman had a private practice focusing on bankruptcy and construction litigation. As counsel for the jockeys, she is able to combine her career with her passion for the sport of horse racing.
When she is not working in the office, or at the races, she can be found spending time with friends at sporting events, watching polo matches, and exploring new places. She also spends her time volunteering for two organizations, the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) and the Brain Injury Alliance of Kentucky (BIAK).
