Biosketch
Dr. Shanmugasundaram earned a MBBS in Medical Sciences and Research at the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Coimbatore, India. After finishing medical school and internship training in India, he moved to the United States. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at University of Arizona where he also served as a Chief Resident. He completed a General Cardiology fellowship at University of Arizona where he was a Chief Fellow, after which he completed Interventional Cardiology training at University of Kentucky Medical Center. He also completed an additional year of training in Structural Heart disease and Peripheral Vascular Interventions at the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Sundaram is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, and Echocardiography. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and fellow of Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI).
Dr. Sundaram’s clinical interests include complex coronary revascularization, hemodynamic support devices, chronic total occlusion, and peripheral vascular interventions including interventions for acute pulmonary embolism. His research interests include peripheral vascular interventional therapies, improvement of outcomes after ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest, and role of hypothermia in acute myocardial infarction. He serves as local principal investigator for national and international clinical trials.
Dr. Sundaram has published in various scientific journals and has been co-author of textbook chapters. He is an expert peer reviewer for various geriatrics, cardiology, interventional cardiology, and critical care journals. He serves as a member of a scientific advisory board, faculty of the International Academy of Cardiology, and World Congress of Cardiology. He has received young investigator travel awards from the Heart Failure Society of America and the American Heart Association. He received early career awards from Cardiovascular Innovations (CVI) and Young leadership award from Cardiovascular Research Technologies (CRT) meetings.
Dr. Sundaram is currently the associate program director for cardiology and interventional cardiology fellowship programs at the University of Arizona. He is the chair of Research and Development committee at the SAVAHCS.
