Dr. Wittkamp earned a BS in Physiology at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville graduating Summa Cum Laude. He earned an MD and completed his residency at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. He completed a Pediatric Critical Care Medicine fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. After five years in rural practice, Dr. Wittkamp returned to Emory and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for his Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship. He is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, and the American Board of Pediatrics, Critical Care Medicine.
Clinical interests include Extracorporeal Therapies, Medical Simulation, Pre-hospital Stabilization of Critically Ill Children, and Resident and Medical Student Education.
Dr. Wittkamp's central responsibilities outside of pediatric critical care encompass educational programming for peers, nurses, residents, and medical students. Part of this charge includes direction of the quickly growing medical simulation program within the Kentucky Children’s Hospital, meant to complement education, patient care, and patient safety endeavors. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Wittkamp served as a faculty member and the Assistant Fellowship Director for Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Wittkamp was inspired to return to critical care medicine after five years in remote rural Arizona, serving as a Pediatric Medical Officer with the Indian Health Service, Navajo Region, in Chinle, Arizona. During this very broad practice, he had his first experience using simulation in staff education and readiness. This was borne out of use in Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation Program offerings but he later extended simulation use as a tool for disaster preparedness for his remote facility.
