Biosketch
Dr. Flaherty retired in 2010 after 22 years of active military service and currently is the Trauma Medical Director at the Cape Fear Valley Health System in Fayetteville, NC where he maintains an active affiliation with military medicine through liaison with Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, NC. His military experience culminated in the positions of Trauma Medical Section Chief, General Surgery Service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, trauma consultant to the Surgeon General of the Army and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Prior to these positions, Dr. Flaherty was Chief of the Division of Surgery and Director of the Trauma Program at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center; Chief, Department of Surgery at Womack Army Medical Center; Augmentee General Surgeon, Joint Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg; and Trauma System Surveyor with the Texas Department of Health. He also served as a general surgeon during Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Joint Forge. He received a BS degree from Tufts University in 1984 and a MD from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1988.
Dr. Flaherty is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is associated with the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He currently sits on the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons at the national level. He has served on several other committees, including the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff, Risk Management Committee, and Credentials Committee at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, as well as Surgical Care Line Chair, Executive Committee of the Medical Staff, Hospital Performance Improvement Committee, and Credentials Committee at Womack Army Medical Center. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Surgeon General’s Physician Recognition Award, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Medal, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and National Defense Service Ribbon with bronze service star. He is the author of several journal articles and has been invited to speak at many national and international symposia.
