James T. Handa, MD

James T. Handa is Robert Bond Welch, M.D. Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland. He specializes in medical and surgical management of vitreoretinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, retinopathy of prematurity, and other pediatric retinal diseases. He also has expertise in intraocular oncology and manages patients with choroidal melanomas, metastatic tumors to the eye, and retinoblastoma. Not only is he a highly skilled surgeon and clinician, but he also devotes significant effort to research related to the early causes of age-related macular degeneration. In his research, he uses molecular pathological approaches to understand how the eye transforms from normal aging to early macular degeneration.

Dr. Handa received his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and completed Ophthalmology Residency at the Wills Eye Hospital of the Jefferson Medical College. This was followed by fellowships in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Duke University Eye Center and Intraocular Oncology at the University of Southern California, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. Dr. Handa is board-certified in Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is recipient of the Inaugural Thomas Orton Jones Fellowship in Age-related Macular Degeneration.
