Bonita began her nursing career in pediatrics then moved to home health before deciding public health was the nursing field for her. She has more than 18 years’ experience in local and state public health, including working as a nurse consultant in quality improvement, managed care and case management. Her current role is managing the day-to-day operation of the Kentucky Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (HDSP) Program and Co-Project lead for the #1305 State Public Health Actions to Prevent and Control Diabetes, Heart Disease, Obesity and Association Risk Factors and Promote School Health grant. Her responsibilities include supervising program staff, writing and submitting progress reports, writing and monitoring contracts, monitoring budget expenditures, providing training and technical assistance to local health departments and partners statewide and performing other tasks required to administer both federal grants and their funding. She also works with state partners to identify systems and policy changes to meet heart disease and stroke needs statewide and develop quantitative measures of program effectiveness. The HDSP Program is in the Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Branch, so she participates on various chronic disease committees and workgroups; and coordinates activities among the heart disease and stroke program, other chronic disease programs and partners.
