Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:

  • Review fundamental elements of addiction medicine and assessment of pain in older patients with the identification of risk factors for abuse and addiction
  • Explain how to integrate opioid analgesics into a pain treatment plan individualized to the needs of the patient
  • Discuss how to safely and effectively manage patients on opioid analgesics in the acute and chronic pain settings, including initiating therapy, titrating, and discontinuing use of opioid analgesics
  • Assess when referral to a pain specialist is appropriate
  • Demonstrate how to counsel patients and caregivers about the use of naloxone for opioid overdose
  • Practice communicating with patients and caregivers about safe use of opioid analgesics, including proper storage and disposal

This activity is designed for prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances including physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, dentists, and any other interested healthcare professionals such as social workers and public health professionals.
