Michelle Bay is an Advanced Cardiac Sonographer at the University of Kentucky’s Gill Heart and Vascular Institute. She received her Associates of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography from St. Catharine College in 2006 and her Bachelors of Science in Health Science from Northern Kentucky University in 2016. In her department, Michelle serves as a Team Leader, Clinical Instructor, and Quality Improvement Coordinator. In her twelve years as a sonographer, Michelle has enjoyed providing technical assistance for research projects as well as assisting with the re-accreditation of the Adult Echo Lab by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission. In October 2018 she presented a session at the Kentucky Chapter of the American College of Cardiology Scientific Meeting.

Peggy Cox, RDCS

Peggy Cox is a registered Cardiac Sonographer/RN at the University of Kentucky Gill Heart and Vascular Institute. She received her Associate of Science degree in Nursing from Central Ohio Technical College in 1989 and obtained her registry in Cardiac Ultrasound in 1998. Peggy has been scanning adult Echo's since 1990 and has extensive experience from Riverside Methodist Hospital, Heart Specialists of Ohio and Ohio State University Echo lab in Columbus, Ohio.

Peggy was a previous reviewer for the IAC and mentor for Cardiology fellows at OSU and the University of Kentucky.

He then completed a residency in internal medicine as well as his fellowship in cardiovascular medicine and advanced echocardiography at the University of Kentucky. Bryana Levitan, BA, RDCS, FASE

Bryana M. Levitan, BA, RDCS, FASE is the lead Adult Congenital Sonographer and a Cardiovascular Research Sonographer at the University of Kentucky Gill Heart and Vascular Institute and a member of the American Society of Echocardiography Research Committee. She received her Associates of Applied Science in Cardiovascular Ultrasound from Ultrasound Diagnostic School of Jacksonville, FL in 1998 and her Bachelors of Arts from Catawba College, Salisbury, NC in 1996. Over her twenty year career Bryana has worked as an adult cardiovascular sonographer, adult congenital sonographer and pediatric sonographer. Her responsibilities in the academic medical setting have included training other sonographers, cardiology fellows, other physicians and researchers in echocardiography. Bryana has multiple clinical and technical research publications as well as presentations at clinical meetings including the American Society of Echocardiography and the Kentucky Chapter of the American College of Cardiology Scientific Meeting.

Mikel D. Smith has been the Director of the Adult Echocardiography Laboratory at the Gill Heart Institute since 1988. He also serves as the Medical Director of the Cardiac Sonographer Training Program at St. Catharine College in Springfield, Ky. He is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital and has been with the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine since 1982.

Smith received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and completed his residency in medicine and fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.

Smith has received a number of honors, including the Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at the University of Kentucky as well as the Outstanding Teacher Award for Kentucky from the American College of Physicians, and has received Master Teacher Awards in all five categories at the University of Kentucky. In June 2014, he was given the Richard Popp Excellence in Teaching Award- a national honor for teaching given by the American Society of Echocardiography. Smith has written 15 book chapters and authored over 200 papers and abstracts.

Smith served on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Echocardiography and the editorial board for the Journal of the American Society of Echo. In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, he was elected a Fellow in the American Heart Association Council on Clinical Cardiology, and is board certified in both Nuclear Cardiology and Echocardiography.
