Needs Statement

Health care professionals are trained to communicate within their own profession, but not among multiple professions.  Although there is an emerging understanding of, and training for, interprofessional communication, none of the existing models incorporate the patient as a member of the team to be included in the communication process.  No effective model of communication includes all professions and the patient.  

Target Audience

Pharmacists, Physicians, Dentists, Health Educators, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Physician Assistants, Psychologists, Social Workers and Speech-Language Pathologists

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Identify the unique characteristics of team-patient-caregiver communication in healthcare.
2. Describe the PEEER© Model.
3. Explain the 5 skill categories needed to achieve effective team-patient-caregiver communication.
4. Recognize examples of effective and ineffective communication when observed.
5. Discuss the use of specific skills to achieve effective communication within teams and with patients and their caregivers.
