Needs Statement

Concerns about abuse and diversion of gabapentin have been raised in many states, with some states considering listing gabapentin as a “drug of concern,” reportable to their prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs), while others have proposed reclassifying the medication as a controlled substance.

Target Audience

Health care professionals/prescribers including physicians, physician assistants, nurses, advance practice registered nurses, pharmacists, dentists, dental hygienists, social workers, counselors, and any others interested in the prevention of and treatment for substance abuse disorder and sustained recovery.

Objectives

Upon the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss current evidence regarding gabapentin misuse and diversion
  • Discuss results of survey of Kentucky pharmacists regarding gabapentin misuse and regulation
  • Describe gabapentin prescribing variations in Kentucky after reclassification as a Schedule V controlled substance
