Needs Statement

This module is intended for school personnel training (nurses and designated non-nurse staff) who will provide diabetes-related care and medication administration to students with diabetes in a school setting. Speakers include nurse experts in the field of pediatric diabetes from UKHC Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center, Norton Children's Wendy Novak Center (Louisville), and Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

Target Audience

Nurses and other designated non-licensed school personnel

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Review and recall Kentucky state laws and legal considerations associated with diabetes in KY schools.
  • Identify the responsibilities of the school nurse and non-medical school personnel in diabetes-related care at schools.
  • Describe diabetes pathophysiology and associated self-care behaviors, age-related tasks, supportive care, and monitoring relative to children with diabetes.
  • Discuss the ADCES 7 Self-Care Behaviors Framework and its relevance to the care of school-aged children with diabetes.
  • Review diabetes medical management plans (DMMPs) and describe their role in the care of school-aged children with diabetes.
