Needs Statement

Several behaviors—including gambling, internet gaming, and binge eating—significantly impact the well-being of individuals, but research is lacking on the best approaches to diagnosing and managing these behaviors. Behavioral addictions overlap with and impact the treatment of people living with opioid use disorder and other serious mental illnesses, and are often under-addressed

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify key characteristics and neural pathways shared by problematic behaviors
• Compare and contrast diagnostic criteria of gambling disorder and substance use disorder
• Explain the pros and cons of the management options available to individuals with problematic behaviors
