Needs Statement

Language can be used intentionally or unintentionally to perpetuate stigma in a healthcare setting. Changing our language is a crucial component of reducing stigma to improve the lives and health of people who use drugs or alcohol and people with addiction. This module will address this need.

Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Social Workers

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify language that can be used intentionally or unintentionally to perpetuate stigma
• Explain the importance of using medically appropriate language for substance use disorder
• Use effective terminology when discussing substance use disorder
