Needs Statement

The purpose of this training is to educate the participants about the Trauma-Informed Care Continuum and the pervasiveness of trauma in our communities, including the current opioid crisis and substance use disorder. Individuals who struggle with substance use disorder are at an increased risk for exposure to traumas, in addition to risk factors unique to their culture. Participants will be able to give examples of types of traumas, pervasiveness, and long-term outcomes from the effects of trauma, as well as useful resources.

Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Social Workers

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Review the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Toxic Stress on early child development and on adult outcomes (including Brain Development). 
  • Explain how trauma impacts the whole person with a specific focus on substance use disorder through a trauma-informed lens. 
  • Employ a Trauma-Informed Care Approach in their current role and available resources.
