Needs Statement

In a time when behavioral health issues are being discussed in the media, around the watercooler, and at kitchen tables across the country, there is still a great deal of stigma concerning suicide. In this presentation we will discuss how mental health professionals, parents, partners, teachers and others can enter into healthy conversations about suicide. 

Target Audience

Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Social Workers

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Articulate a foundational understanding of proper terminology and language used to discuss suicide, suicidal ideation, and suicidal acts. 
• Explain the indications and warnings of a person considering suicide 
• Discuss the importance of how to ask questions concerning a person’s intent to complete suicide 
• Explain how the use of proper language and comfortable communication can reduce the stigma surrounding suicide and behavioral health and wellness overall.
