Needs Statement

Opioid overdoses are largely encountered and treated by paramedics and EMTs usually with naloxone and supportive care. While naloxone is a lifesaving medication, it does not treat opioid use disorder and most EMS staff are not familiar with medications for opioid use disorder and their efficacy, and how to further direct these patients to evidence-based care

Target Audience

Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Social Workers

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the medications that are FDA approved for opioid use disorder 
  • Explain the unique approach to care, encouraging EMS to initiate buprenorphine in the field and refer to care in the moment 
  • Describe outcomes and effects on EMS after incorporating this change in care
