The treatment of substance use disorder and serious mental illness must occur concurrently to increase chances of success in the treatment of each one. Recognizing the presence of co-morbid psychiatric disorders and initiating treatment for them will improve outcome in the treatment of substance use disorder.Target Audience

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:- Identify the presence of a co-morbid psychiatric disorder in a patient with substance use disorder
- Choose appropriate referrals for the care of the psychiatric disorder
- Apply strategies to support the patient’s adherence to both substance use and mental health treatment
- Explain the different levels of care in substance use disorder treatment facilities
