Needs Statement

The treatment of substance use disorder and serious mental illness must occur concurrently to increase chances of success in the treatment of each one.  Recognizing the presence of co-morbid psychiatric disorders and initiating treatment for them will improve outcome in the treatment of substance use disorder.

Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Social Workers

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the presence of a co-morbid psychiatric disorder in a patient with substance use disorder  
  • Choose appropriate referrals for the care of the psychiatric disorder  
  • Apply strategies to support the patient’s adherence to both substance use and mental health treatment  
  • Explain the different levels of care in substance use disorder treatment facilities
