Needs Statement

There are various pharmacological and behavioral methods available to assist with tobacco cessation.  While each method, individually, has the potential to increase the likelihood of success, when combined, their complementary benefits further improve the chance of long-term cessation.  Members of the healthcare team can implement many of these tobacco treatment measures within the healthcare setting.  Furthermore, they can—and should—refer their patients for additional support.  Unfortunately, healthcare team members often lack awareness of the innovative, multi-dimensional tobacco treatment programs that are offered in their community.

Target Audience

Physicians, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Public Health Professionals, Social Workers


Upon competion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. State 3 different tobacco treatment interventions.
  2. Describe 2 strategies to assist in breaking habits.
  3. Identify the 3 main components of the Get Fit and Quit program.
  4. List 2 principles of harm reduction.
