Needs Statement

Although conventional cigarette use has markedly declined over the past several decades in the U.S., there have been substantial increases in the use of new tobacco products called Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), or e-cigarettes (e-cigs), over the past 20 years.  Due to their more recent emergence on the market, the frequent and ongoing evolution of the products, the mixed messaging related to safety and cessation, and the lack of randomized controlled trials to provide evidence-based conclusions, members of the health care team often lack the training and knowledge needed to effectively counsel their patients regarding the use of e-cigs, particularly during pregnancy.

Objectives

 Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

       1. State three common names for e-cigs and four common components of e-cig devices.
       2. Describe the difference in prevalence patterns between e-cig and conventional cigarette users in the
           U.S.
       3. State the two most common reasons that individuals use e-cigs.
       4. Identify three health effects of e-cig use in general and in pregnancy.
       5. Describe the effectiveness of e-cig use as a smoking cessation aid in pregnancy.
       6. Identify two topics for future research on e-cigs.
