Needs Statement

Perinatal providers and staff surveyed on the topic of perinatal tobacco treatment indicated counseling pregnant patients to cessation is important, but providers/staff lack the training and knowledge to feel confident and effective in treatment. Examples include lack of training on the 5 A's of tobacco cessation (as recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology), how to conduct motivational interviewing within limited appointment time-frames, appropriate medications to use during pregnancy to support cessation, and how to bill insurance for cessation counseling services.

Physicians, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Public Health Professionals, Social Workers

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. State the risks of smoking on pregnancy and infant outcomes.
2. List and successfully implement the 5As of tobacco treatment.
3. Identify common smoking triggers and strategies to help cope with each trigger.
4. Identify the medications that can be used during pregnancy to assist with tobacco cessation, including common dosages, side effects, and if prescription necessary to obtain.
5. List common HCPCS/CPT and ICD-10 CM codes that can be used to bill for specific tobacco treatment services.
