Needs Statement

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a treatable, chronic disease that often involves cycles of relapse and remission due to complex interactions in the brain, heredities, and an individual’s environment layered with life experiences. People with SUD often engage in risky and compulsive behaviors that result in harm to themselves or others. An individual’s substance use treatment and services plan must be assessed continually and modified as necessary to ensure that it meets his or her changing needs. This can become quite complex as many drug-addicted individuals often have other co-morbidities that complicate care, including mental health disorders. As a result, several challenges can arise from the comprehensive care of substance use disorders. This warrants the need for best practices and effective communication between providers and their patients regarding individualized assessments and treatment plans that they can collaboratively develop and agree upon together. These met needs should yield treatment and support services that also consider and reflect each patient’s individual needs and preferences.

To demonstrate some of these best practices and applications, this activity will:

  1. Review monitoring and documentation strategies for substance use disorder treatment.
  2. Outline key components to communicate with a patient about substance use disorder.
  3. Discuss practical strategies for motivating a patient’s commitment to treatment goals.
  4. Describe the process of shared decision-making with patients.
