Needs Statement
According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine, addiction is a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experiences. People with addiction use substances or engage in behaviors that become compulsive and often continue despite harmful consequences. No single treatment is appropriate for everyone but treatment needs to be readily available and attend to multiple needs of the individual, not just his or her drug abuse and medications are an important element of treatment for many patients, especially when combined with counseling and other behavioral therapies. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 19.7 million American adults (aged 12 and older) battled a substance use disorder in 2017. Almost 74% of adults suffering from a substance use disorder in 2017 struggled with an alcohol use disorder and about 38% of adults in 2017 battled an illicit drug use disorder. That same year an estimated 20.7 million people age 12 and older needed treatment for a substance use disorder. Only 4 million people received treatment, or about 19% of those who needed it. (www.drugabuse.gov). This activity should help participants:- Define Addiction
- Identify ways to manage addiction as a chronic disease
- Discuss the effect of drugs on the brain including dopamine and other neurotransmitters
- Demonstrate the process for initiating treatment for Opiate Use Disorder (OUD) with buprenorphine and extended release naltrexone
- Name 3 medications FDA approved to treat Alcohol Use Disorder
- Discuss other substances and current treatment recommendations
- Develop individualized plans of care for substance use treatment including medications and behavioral interventions
- Review process for treating opiate use disorder with Naltrexone vs Buprenorphine
- Identify how to obtain a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine and additional training resources
