Needs Statement

Approximately 10% of the population over the age of 65 years (~4.3 million persons) in the United States have been the victims of elder abuse, and this number is expected to double to almost 90 million persons by 2050 unless current trends are altered. Two out of every 3 victims of elder abuse suffer from dementia, many of whom reside in CNFs. Types of abuse include financial, neglect, physical, sexual and verbal and each needs to be recognized and appropriate interventions pursued.

Target Audience

This is for ALL Certified Nursing Facilities personnel in Kentucky.

Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
1. Develop an easy to use algorithm for use in capacity determination for those with dementia
2. Describe common types of elder abuse that can occur in residential care facilities
3. Discuss federal guidance for reporting elder abuse, as described in the Federal Elder Justice Act
4. Develop strategies to increase identification of abuse and corrective action plans to eliminate this problem

State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. UK HealthCare CECentral maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.50 clinical continuing education credits.
