Biosketch
Dr. Smolen is Professor of Internal Medicine and Chairman, Department of Rheumatology, Vienna General Hospital, University of Vienna; and Chairman, 2nd Dept. of Medicine – Center for Rheumatic Diseases Hietzing Hospital Vienna. His areas of interest include pathogenesis of rheumatic diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus
erythematosus; new therapeutic approaches to the treatment of rheumatic diseases. He has contributed to over 200 publications in the field of rheumatology and immunology.
