Professor Pennell was an undergraduate at St. John's College, Cambridge and trained in cardiology at St Thomas' Hospital, London, and the London Chest Hospital. He has specialized in Cardiovascular MR since 1988 and is a GMC registered UK specialist in Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiology.
Research interests are in CMR, specifically in the measurement of myocardial iron and the assessment of chelation treatment, the assessment and differentiation of cardiomyopathies, the detection and assessment of early atherosclerosis, and myocardial perfusion imaging. This work has resulted in a substantial reduction in mortality in thalassaemia patients, and an enormous growth of the use of CMR in inherited cardiac conditions.
Professor Pennell has published >500 research papers and has received a number of fellowships, including in 2014 to the Academy of Medical Sciences.
