Dr. Amy Barton Pai, Pharm.D., BCPS, FASN, FCCP, is Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Adjunct Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Albany Medical College. She obtained her Bachelors of Science in Pharmacy from Albany College of Pharmacy in 1996. She then completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, New York, in 1997 and received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Albany College of Pharmacy in 1999. From 1999-2001 she was a Nephrology Research Fellow at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Dr. Barton Pai is Director of the ANephRx Core Laboratory. Her clinical and translational research program focuses on oxidative stress and inflammation in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Her laboratory conducts in vivo and in vitro investigations of the effects intravenous iron compounds, vitamin D and other pharmaceuticals on cytokine activation, reactive oxygen species formation and lipid peroxidation to better understand the potential effects of the agents on vascular disease in patients with kidney disease. Other research interests include pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism in CKD, effects of iron on Gram-positive organism growth and infection and outcomes related to clinical pharmacy interventions in CKD patients. She is also dedicated to training future Clinical Pharmacy Scientists.
Dr. Barton Pai is Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the American Society of Nephrology. She serves on several national committees including the American Society of Nephrology Dialysis Advisory Group, the NIH National Kidney Disease Education Panel (NKDEP) Coordinating Committee and she also serves as Chair of the Pharmacy Work Group for NKDEP.
