Biosketch
Jay earned a BS in Mining Engineering from West Virginia University and an MS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He started his career in health and safety mining research as a Project Engineer at Bituminous Coal Research and then as a Senior Engineer with Boeing Technical Services. Jay then entered government service as a Mining Engineer for the US Bureau of Mines and is now a Senior Scientist with NIOSH.
The focus of his research with the government has been to develop and evaluate control technologies that reduce mine-worker exposure to respirable coal and silica dust, in an effort to prevent the development of lung disease in miners.
