Michelle Lofwall, MD, DFASAM

Biography

Dr. Lofwall completed residency training in Psychiatry and a clinical research fellowship in behavioral pharmacology at Johns Hopkins University. She has an outpatient office-based opioid addiction treatment practice and is actively engaged in teaching and clinical research, investigating medication diversion and opioid use disorder treatments. Dr. Lofwall is the immediate past President of the Kentucky Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and Associate Editor of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry newsletter, recipient of several medical student teaching and mentorship awards, and a member of the Kentucky Governor’s State Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Advisory Council.

Jennifer Havens, PhD, MPH

Biography

Dr. Havens is an epidemiologist with an appointment in the Center on Drug and Alcohol Research. She earned a MPH and a PhD from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her primary research interests include the epidemiology of prescription opioid abuse in rural Appalachia, the co-morbidity of substance and mental disorders, and HIV and other infectious complications of drug use. In 2009, Dr. Havens was the Principal Investigator for an NIH-funded R01 entitled “Social Networks and HIV Risk among Rural Drug Users”. She also served as a co-Investigator on two additional NIH-funded grants. Dr. Havens also submitted two grants to NIH–one under the ARRA/RC funding mechanism and an R01 that was part of a larger P50 center grant submitted by Dr. Sharon Walsh. Dr. Havens published eleven manuscripts in 2009, four of which were first author publications. She has three additional manuscripts in-press and two under review. Dr. Havens also authored two book chapters that will be released in 2010. Dr. Havens presented at two national conferences including the College on the Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD) and the Addiction Health Services Research (AHSR) conference. At CPDD, Dr. Havens served along with Dr. Carl Leukefeld as the session chair. Dr. Havens was also invited to present her research at the University of California, San Diego in the Division of Global Health. Dr. Havens is currently teaching a section of the MDD811–Introduction to Clinical Medicine that began in August of 2009. She is also working with two graduate students from the Department of Health Behavior in the College of Public Health and Sociology. Dr. Havens reviewed manuscripts for the following journals in 2009: Drug and Alcohol Dependence (4 reviews), International Journal of Drug Policy, Harm Reduction Journal, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, BMC Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Behavior and the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology. She also served on the Membership Committee for the College on the Problems of Drug Dependence.

Nicole Leedy, MD

Biography

Dr. Leedy completed her medical training at the Loan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. She completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Kentucky. She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics. Clinical interests include HIV, infectious diseases, sexually transmitted infections, and travel medicine.

Derek Forster, MD

Biography

Derek Forster, MD received his medical degree from the University of Louisville School Of Medicine in Louisville, KY where he also completed his residency in internal medicine. He then completed his Infectious Disease Fellowship training at Wake Forest University – Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Kentucky College Of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases. His clinical interests include HIV, hepatitis C and hospital acquired infections. He also serves as the medical director for Infection Prevention and Control for the University of Kentucky Healthcare system.

Ashutosh Barve, MD, PhD

Biography

Dr. Barve earned an MD from the Seth G.S. Medical College and K.E.M. Hospital in India. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky, and a Gastroenterology fellowship at the UofL Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. He also earned a PhD from the University of Kentucky. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine: Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Areas of interest include Liver Cancer, Transplant Hepatology, General Hepatology, Therapeutic Endoscopy, Toxin-Induced Liver Disease, Colon Cancer Screening, and General Gastroenterology.
