Appalachia is a culturally rich and diverse region. This free training program focuses on issues contributing to cancer health disparities affecting rural and Appalachian residents. Appalachian Patient Navigation provides patient- centered, community-based strategies to successfully address challenges in cancer early detection and care.

At the end of this training participants will be able to:
  • Define cancer navigation
  • Describe key functions for cancer navigators
  • Identify situations where culture impacts patient navigation
  • Respond to the common cultural challenges that patient navigators face in Appalachia
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how to carry out a community needs assessment in Appalachia to identify available resources and barriers to services
  • Develop a listing of community resources available to support patients
  • Describe key communication issues related to patient navigation
  • Identify skills necessary for effective communication
  • Describe common barriers to obtaining care
  • Identify skills needed for effective communication
