Overview

Diabetes is often described as a common and costly disease. In Kentucky, the prevalence of diabetes in adults is 13.4% as compared to 9.3% of the population in the United States. The American Diabetes Association estimates that diabetes costs Kentucky $2.66 billion dollars in direct and $1.19 billion dollars in indirect costs. Research has shown that the development of type 2 diabetes in those at risk can be prevented or at least delayed by 58% with participation in an evidence-based lifestyle modification program. Data from the Kentucky Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (KyBRFSS) survey show that 8.4% of adults in the state are aware they have prediabetes; however, national data predict that 9 out of 10 people with prediabetes are unware they have it.

The Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center (BBDC) is a leader for the state’s flagship enterprise, the University of Kentucky. The BBDC provides expert clinical care, self-management education, diabetes prevention strategies, and quality research for the state and region, with professional influence nationwide. Through invited speakers and our expert professional staff, we seek to provide an educational platform to disseminate our areas of expertise with our colleagues across our state and beyond.
