Needs Statement

Exsanguination is the leading cause of preventable death after trauma. Following hemorrhage control, resuscitation with blood products is critical to improved survival. An understanding of available blood products and their appropriate use is mandatory to optimizing outcomes after trauma.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the different types of plasma that are available for use in trauma patients.
  2. Discuss an update on the concept of hemostatic resuscitation.
  3. Describe available sources of red blood cells for transfusion.
