Needs Statement

A new update from the US Public Health Service Guidelines for the Management of Occupational Exposures to HIV and Recommendations for Postexposure Prophylaxis that providers may not be familiar with include the following:
- Prompt management of occupational exposures
- Selection of effective / tolerable PEP regimens
- Potential toxicities /interactions of PEP drugs
- Consultation with experts for postexposure management strategies
- Counseling /follow-up of exposed personnel

Objectives

Upon Completion of this activity Pharmacist will be able to:

1. Discuss the goals of post-exposure care
2. Discuss ways to prevent transmission
3. Describe how to avoid unnecessary PEP/minimize toxicity
4. Determine whether transmission has occurred
