Needs Statement

Scientific conferences such as the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections 2010 (CROI 2010) provide attendees with the most current updates on developments in HIV management; these data are critical to practitioners in their clinical settings. The updates, presented by leading experts in the field of HIV research, give insights into the most effective treatment regimens and management strategies, arming HIV health care providers (HCPs) with knowledge they can use to optimize patient outcomes. However, not all HIV HCPs can attend these conferences, thus there is a need for the crucial information presented at such meetings to be effectively communicated to a larger audience of HIV HCPs.
This CME activity provides expert commentaries on the highlights of clinically relevant data presented at CROI 2010. This activity provides participants with important information regarding the latest findings on initiation of treatment and effects on complications and comorbidities, the potential benefits of expanded HIV testing and treatment, new agents in development, and new data from clinical trials.

This issue of POSITIVE PULSE is an independent CME/CE-certified activity commenting on findings from CROI 2010 and is not an official publication of the conference.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for health care practitioners (physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses) involved in the management of HIV patients.

Objectives

1. Determine the impact recent developments in the field of HIV research, including epidemiology, transmission, access/linkage to care, and updates to treatment guidelines, will have on patients in care;
2. Integrate the latest data from clinical trials regarding the use of existing and novel antiretroviral agents into current clinical paradigms to improve HIV treatment outcomes;
3. Implement strategies, based in new data on HIV- and ARV-associated comorbidities, to treat and address the whole-health care needs of patients with HIV.
