Needs Statement

The emergence of memory problems and subsequent development of a clinical dementia poses significant health risks to affected persons. Our analysis of such problems suggests that they cluster in three key areas including driving, medication management, and home safety issues. These risks are poorly understood by many primary care providers, but it is essential that they understand these risks in order to develop appropriate pre-emptive strategies for disease management. The educational needs are understanding key risk areas that are the targets for intervention, a lack of formal education in key safety areas, and a lack of available educational resources for patients and primary caregivers, forcing them to rely on their primary medical providers for such information.

Target Audience

Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers, Nursing Home Administrators, Home Health Providers, and other health care professionals

Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the safety implications related to polypharmacy in older patients with dementia
  • Explain appropriate strategies to reduce adverse drug reactions
  • Assess the capacity for older patients to operate motor vehicles
  • Identify the safety risks associated with impaired driving
  • Identify at least three strategies to enhance the well-being of persons with dementia through environmental modifications in the home
  • Recognize the importance of privacy and confidentiality in the disclosure of health information for the protection of patient safety
